I found out that I have arthritis in both my knees a few years ago. I'm really bow-legged (thanks Dad), and according to my doctor, the angles at which my femur (thigh bone) and lower leg bones hit my knee are way off from normal. So there is a lot more friction around my knee, and hence the arthritis. I recall he called me a genetic anomaly, or something of the sort. He's an older guy, and has certainly seen his share of knee problems.
I found the creaky joints website has lots of good info on creaky knees. I'm also a big fan of Dona supplements for my knees. Apparently Dona is a prescription medicine in Europe---so it's good quality, and it has lots of research to back up it's claims.
