Review: Keetsa Mattress Store

My friend Kory recommended Keetsa Mattress Store to me, and I have to pass this information on. Keetsa uses materials that are recycled, recyclable, natural and sustainable, so I want to support them. All of their mattresses and pillows are infused with a yummy smelling extract from green tea that fights odor and bacteria. No chemicals! I wake up smelling like a fresh pot of sencha. Ever see that cheeseball commercial for the foam mattress where they bounce the wine glass on the mattress? Not only did I get a similar foam mattress, but the sales guy actually bounced (or tried to bounce) a glass on it. I'm still completely missing the point of it, too.

As for the mattress, it's like sleeping on a cloud. I admit, it took a couple of weeks to get used to---it feels really different from the standard spring mattress. Keetsa wants you to try it for at least 30 days, as they recognize most people are not used to their foam mattresses. I tried it, and sure enough I got used to it. I'm such a sucker for marketing.

And wait--it gets better. When you buy a mattress, they compress all the air, squish up the mattress and stick it in a box. So you can just throw it in your car, or if you live far, they ship for FREE (that's free, people!) to 48 states. When you get home, you take it out and get to watch it slowly puff up. Free entertainment!

And now for the best part. The box is so big, you can do all sorts of creative stuff with it. Me, I called up my friend to come over and play. We played Hide and Go Seek,

It's a Spaceship!, and Find a Penny in the Box. Good fun.

Can you provide your thoughts or a review of the mattress. How is the build quality, is it comfortable, how does it compare to the more common brands?

Hi E,
The bed is very comfortable. It took a while to get used to the foam--about two weeks--but I love it. It's good quality, smells like tea (seriously, they use it as a deodorizer), and is the most comfortable bed I've ever had!

Is your bed made of memory foam? That cheesy commercial you mentioned is for a memory foam bed, which is anything but natural or friendly to the environment. It releases toxic gases during the manufacturing process, as well as long afterwards, and a scented deodarant is often added to mask the odor of the off-gassing.

I'm not trying to burst your bubble or anything, especially since the bed is so comfy, but it sounds like you're interested in supporting green businesses, and I'd be curious to know how this store figures that memory foam is any better for the environment than the conventional PU foam used in most beds. As far as I know, the only foam used in beds that is not full of chemicals is natural latex.

Now, if this store has a recycling program for their beds, that would be a good thing, as discarded mattress are the single biggest problem for landfills, and memory foam does not decompose any faster than polyfoam.

OK, off my soapbox now...

Hi J,
The Keetsa website has lots more info, you should check it out. They do recycle, and their green-ness is good enough for me.

I read the Keetsa website, and it looks like they use traditional memory foam, but add a green tea extract and some silver, engage in recycling and put the mattress is a box. However, I believe they would still have to add fire retardent chemicals to the foam in California at least, and the foam itself is made of petrochemicals and emits toxic gases. For anyone concerned about their health, I would be very skeptical of this type of mattress.

Keetsa use Natural base FR materials.
If you have some question about it just call keetsa store or send to email to slaes lab. :)

Keetsa mattresses are made with petroleum based, polyurethane foam (fossil fuels). That's not eco friendly.

They are "green washing." The product is not green, so they put it in a recycled box and put a nice green logo on it.

Actually, Keetsa's foam is their own proprietary "Bio Foam" which is made from about 88% polyurethane and 12% natural Castor Oil. This is just info from the site. Sure it's not 100% green but it's a lot better than most mattress companies out there, and I can say from experience that the bad is way more comfortable than 99% of the other mattresses I've tried.

I would reccomend it, especially since the pricing, for the quality of bed that you're getting, is way below industry standard.
