I keep reading articles like this one talking about how the bees are dying off. When I was little, I used to hate bees...but now that I have a garden, I don't mind them. And I can't ignore how important they are to our food chain.
My perspective on bees changed after reading these two books:
I loved this book---I read it while I was traveling in Thailand, and I have such sweet memories of escaping the mid-day heat, sprawled out on my bed under the ceiling fan, drinking Japanese iced tea from a box. This book got me very interested in beekeeping, as the main characters make a living out of gathering and selling honey.
A sweet book about friendship, family, and love. I hope I'm this feisty when I'm older! I read this book shortly after finishing the first book on bees. I think I'm onto a theme here.
So now I want my own beehive in the backyard. Jarring honey sounds so old-school and fun, like they did on "Little House on the Prairie". I guess I should check with my neighbors first?
And lucky me, there's a beekeeepers' association right here in San Francisco:

The Secret Life of Bees was awesome. Her non-fiction Dance of the Dissident daughter was also good. Mermaid Chair, not so great - but I tend to be critical of books set in my hometown. :-)
I was also disappointed with Mermaid Chair...and I hear it's being made into a movie! I'll have to check out Dance of the Dissident Daughter...thanks!
